This shot was far and away the most technically demanding shot in Hellbent
So here’s how we managed it.
Even from the animatic it was pretty obvious it was going to be hard. The camera was moving dynamically past an animating background with a SFX element in focus.
It was pretty clear to me this shot was going to need to be partly or fully 3d.
We’ve used 3d reference in the videos before. But this was the first time it would be IN the actual video, so I needed to convince Ben
it could be done and blended in a way that wouldn’t stand out awfully against
Kressent’s beautiful backgrounds.
I was able to get started on this shot pretty early but that turned out to be a double sided sword. I had time to try things but I didn’t have character animation or even final background reference until much later.
So I started blocking it out in 3d.
(old bg colors from the con preview)
Matching the 2d truck and van in 3d would have been near impossible, so I opted to use the 2d flash asset we already had.
Then the flash asset match moved manually to the 3d reference.
The shot was slightly re-timed from this version
(rendering the background to a video format flash can play turned out to be a real pain)
Next up was set dressing
Heilos got me a ton of nice little assets to throw around the scene
and starrrrsssss
I used blender and cycles for rendering. Lots of janky tricks. but here’s the main one for getting alpha textures to work nicely on the 2d billboards.
For weirdos who are into that kind of thing.
Then it was just a matter of animating the Fire moving through a windscreen and a complex 3D camera move.
Easy!
At this point I had the 3d render of the background
And a folder of swf files for each element in the shot. (using PBnDumbexport)
And it was up to AE to glue all this stuff together
Over all I’m pretty happy with how this shot turned out, few problems, some I didn’t even notice until doing this write up.
Kressent was literally killing herself with backgrounds so there was actually another shot that used this 3D background
software used flash cs6, after effects cc,
blender 2.7
Here’s a discord I’m on a lot if you have any questions:
And now for an announcement from your friendly neighborhood IT worker.
If you use Ad Block Plus, you should uninstall it and download and install uBlock Origin immediately. (There are Firefox versions of all the extensions I’ll talk about here, just google ‘em. And some for IE, Edge and Opera.)
Ad Block Plus is now now only letting advertisers pay them to whitelist some ads, but is now letting advertisers pay them to put their own ads on websites INSTEAD of what you would normally see on that website.
Please remember that it’s possible to spread malware, including Crypotowall type malware, through ads on websites. Yes, ads are how websites make most to all of their revenue, but until ads can be trusted to not destroy your machine, you should not view them if possible.
Please make sure you get uBlock Origin and not just uBlock.
I also suggest installing a flash blocker like FlashControl. This will keep flash from automatically loading on websites you visit. Unfortunately, malware can be spread through just about any version of flash. Make sure you keep flash up to date, as well. FlashControl will be slightly disruptive to your browsing habits, but most things will load with just a single click. You can always disable it on a website if it’s being too disruptive somewhere.
If you really want to protect your privacy, install Privacy Badger. Privacy Badger will stop trackers / cookies from knowing who you are and where you’ve been on the internet. It also can be slightly disruptive, so if a site isn’t working correctly, disable one or both of FlashControl and Privacy Badger.
Even if you don’t want to do FlashControl and Privacy Badger, PLEASE do yourself a favor and move to uBlock Origin. Hope this helps!
fact checked. yep, it’s for real. uninstalling asap.
I was having trouble with the links above due to Tumblr’s redirecting not working. But here’s the addresses for the three programs in the Chrome Store.
the Electronic Frontier Foundation recommends, aside from an adblocker (and ublock origin does work much better than adblock), Privacy Badger, and HTTPS Everywhere (that they developped). I recommend Disconnect.Me as well
after installing these extensions you’ll realise just how much websites usually track you
I use uBlock for everything, but Adblock Plus exclusively for YouTube. It allows me to whitelist specfiic channels, and as far as I know you can’t do that with uBlock yet. Not easily, at least.
one of my favorite Little Things about homestuck is johns strife specibus allocation….. i dont mean in like a “this is complex and meaningful and hussie is a genius” way in just a, i like it way. its something that ONLY could have arisen organically out of the kind of collaborative storytelling homestuck was way back in act 1. an independent author would NEVER have made john a hammer user. johns whole thing, thematically, is wind, which is generally associated with lightness, freedom, delicacy, unpredictability. characters who are wind elementals get to use things like bows and arrows, or other projectiles. very light weapons that are thematically appropriate. hammers are fuckin, literally just, Condensed Heavy. and warhammers especially are big, blunt force weapons. sturdy, utilitarian, brutish. generally associated with blacksmithing, so like a fire or earth elemental (altho those dont really exist as skill sets in the Homestuck Encyclopedia of Superpowers). johns a hammer user bc an audience, that had noooo idea that wind powers were ever going to be a thing in homestuck, decided they wanted john to pick up the hammer (and NOT the sword which he had in his magic chest, an equally efficient and perhaps more obvious choice of weapon). so as things go on and the plot develops what you ultimately have is a character w wind powers (i.e. weightlessness) running around wielding a giant hammer (i.e. weaponized weight). if an individual author had plotted the whole thing out ahead of time that never would have happened
