Having actually seen the Emoji movie now (don’t worry, I in no way paid to see it. Look, I’d feel okay paying to see a lot of things including The Room but this? NOPE)

I’d say the most depressing/annoying/aggravating thing aside from literally everything including the bajillion plot holes is these two;

Because… like, I like their designs? Especially Addy (or is it Addie? Don’t remember) like the hair and loose sweater and scarf gives a really… floopy look, for the lack of a better word and it’s like, they’re actually pretty cute? I mean especially next to

(seriously, they gave Wildstyle a body… but her arms are still connected to her head wut?)

And they get totally shafted. It actually went out of its way to deprive the boy of any character, to the point where even an unsent love message is… just copypasted from a pop song. It’s like someone pitched a movie about these two that was actually interesting but some jealous asshat exec slapped it down and decided to make it about emojis just to ruin their vision. Their devotion to keeping Alex flat (he gets less than 20 lines… and most of that’s about as  deep and complex as “wow” or “no way”) feels kinda spiteful somehow.

And it just got me thinking how much better a movie we’d get if it was about two teenage dorks in a long-distance relationship. I mean that’s the point of phones right? Being in contact with people far away? It probably wouldn’t be the next big thing but… would it really have to be? I’d be fine with something simple yet charming.

In other words, Emoji Movie  would be more interesting if it wasn’t the Emoji Movie. I just hate it when there’s some nugget that could have been something endearing or otherwise good but it’s buried under… this.

many animated movies suffer from this thing that the non-human characters are far more appealing than the human ones. This one looks like a huge exception. What a shame.

Well I suppose it wouldn’t be a exec’s cash-grab if it didn’t just get everything wrong (seriously, I’m pretty sure it was never proofread either, and it shows. The plot holes are so glaring even an ace attorney prosecutor couldn’t sweep it under the rug)

It’s honestly almost disturbing how little a connection the supposed main characters made. I mean I am *not* hard to get an emotional response out of. I cried like a little girl over an episode of Pokemon (Meowth Rules, to be exact) and that was just last night.

This is the exact problem I have with it alongside the million other things—the humans are walking plot devices. Hell, Andy from Toy Story and Riley from Inside Out had more development than these two chuckleheads and they’re supposed to be the human connection to the Emoji Ad the movie sets up—and by extension the customers of the product they’re trying to sell.
